Children with autism receive a refurbished computer!

Essays began pouring in as soon as the announcement was made that Goodwill Easter Seals MV was giving away refurbished computers to children with autism.  Essays written by parents, grandparents, and older siblings spoke of how the child with autism would benefit from a computer of his/her own and the extraordinary needs of the family.  Each child was so deserving that the names had to be chosen out of a hat.

Winners were notified by email or phone call, and each one was overjoyed. 

To the surprise of the staff in the Assistive Technology Services office, an anonymous donor heard of the giveaway and upgraded the donation.  Improved CPUs and flatscreen monitors were donated to give to the children.

On Tuesday, December 15, eleven families came between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM to pick up their computers, some without their winning child as the computer will be a Christmas present.  Families got a lesson on operating their computer, a tour of the lending library and multi-sensory room, and a photo with Kevin and Harley (Kevin's service dog) wearing a Santa hat. 

Emotions were high and tears flowed as families thanked GESMV Assistive Technology for this amazing gift.  Volunteers and office staff were emotional, as well, knowing the opportunity technology has for leveling the playing field for these kids.

This was the second autism computer giveaway GESMV Assistive Technology Services has provided to the community and it won't be the last.  The need is just too great.
